Year Ending

The review of the social dance scene can start early for 2019. However most what we will cover this coming year is already well understood by the intermediate social dancers. Footwork will sometimes require legwork too. This refers to the rise and fall of the feet, indicating which part of the foot is to be in contact with the floor on each step or part step; i.e. ball, heel, inside of foot etc. Specially important in the dances which are "to be seen," and specially those that are to be judged. That, of course, stands to a very good reason.

“Social dancers begin each dance the same way to the music and they want to make the moments in the movements important, vital, and worth living."

This is of little importance in the Social Dancing that is done for the pure enjoyment of moving the body to the music. And they can dance better to music that they like, than one that just has the beat. The feet land in the most comfortable and the most naturally balanced position. Most people can allow themselves to let go and if they have the rhythm, that's all they need. And the styling in the Syllabi of the different styles will differ among the large group of dancers on Oahu.

Never did find out who won.
Regarding the worry that some of these very good dancers are watching you and are judging and critical, I have bad news and I have good news: - 1) The bad news is that unless you're a really super dancer, they're not watching you. You're being ignored. - 2) The good news is that unless you're a really super dancer, they're not watching you. You're being ignored. - 3) And if you are a superdancer, and they're watching you with a frown on their faces, it's probably because they envy you, and also they're hard at work trying to steal your material.

Merry Christmas

It’s that time of year again! Time for twinkling lights, festive carols, and merry celebrations. And time for spreading holiday cheer. A big Christmas party at Ron's home in California on Saturday night. Not much news but I did get some fancy collages from my niece Yvonne. I hope somebody sends me some news and pictures of the party.

Let the spirit of love gently fill our hearts and homes
In this loveliest of seasons may you find many reasons for happiness.

Somewhere in California
Here on Oahu, there are dances all over the place and with plenty of dancers there. So everyone is having a good time and some are really thinking of what makes the 25th such a great day.

Great for all ages on Oahu, dance is a fun activity for everyone specially at year's end and it’s such an effective form of exercise. At all dance functions on Oahu, dancers are helping dancers of all age groups, physical abilities and skill levels. Everyone sets up their own dance program that’s comfortable yet challenging.

The Rock Step

This was invented about 10 thousand years ago. 9 thousand? I will not argue the point. Basically it is two changes of weight, each in the opposite direction and the first part of the rock is called the break. It is on record that it is done in only 650 different dances. (670 ?) Regularly you can do the rock step eight different ways depending on the break. You can break forward on the left or on the right foot. You can break back on the left or right foot. You can also break to the right on the right foot or to the left on your left foot, in a side rock. Half of these are the regular normal ways.

“Social dancers believe that they must dance to the music,

the music of their souls!”

The other half are "unnatural" steps and there are even more complicated ways strictly for show. In most dances you break in a complementary fashion. The man breaks forward on his left foot. The lady breaks backward on her right foot. Cha Cha Cha, Rumba, Mambo, Beguine, Calypso and perhaps another couple hundred dances can be good examples, in the “natural” step rhythms. Moreover, they are normally programmed so that the man breaks forward on his left foot and breaks back on his right foot. Any other way can be done but is considered “an unnatural” step.

As we approach the end of the year, many things are developing in the Social Dance field. We, the social dancers are definitely coming into our own in the entire state of Hawaii. We, the ones who have become accustomed to dancing in malls, school cafeterias, district parks, community centers and night clubs. We seem to accept that we can do it very well and have a very enjoyable evening with just 30 or less steps in basic movements in each dance. You want more? No hu hu - up to you.

“You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching, Love like you've never been hurt,
Sing like there's nobody listening, And live like it's heaven on earth.”

Politics 99

Michael Cohen gets three years in prison for partially cooperating with authorities. Sounds like there are more convictions coming from the most crooked administration that has ever been in the White House, since the beginning of time. Hear that Donald J. Trump!! That's number 16! Ivanka will be 17! Jared 18. Donnie Jr. 19 and you will be at last number 20!

Cohen's comments are telling:
"I have been living in a personal and mental incarceration ever since the day that I accepted the offer to work for a real estate mogul whose business acumen I deeply admired," Cohen said. “Today is one of the most meaningful days of my life,” Cohen continued. ”The irony is that today I get my freedom back.” And he is going to jail for three years.

Mueller has been our only hope, and Trump is spending millions to try to stop him. The Senate has been bought and the Supreme Court is not so supreme any more. Democracy has been cancelled. Voting will be illegal. The GOP and the NRA will make the new rules.

In the beginning twenty years ago, my ideal was to get over 10 hits per day. Most Web sites were averaging about 7 or 8 hits per day. When I went past it to eleven hits, I was elated, then much later when I got my next blog it took a little while longer but it went into the teen hits per day. At present, any new blog must get over 20 hits per day or I will think about it. As far as I am concerned the only way is "up." The reader/dancers will make the ultimate decisions. Just gotta work it.

Honolulu is pretty covered by Web and Blog sites. Many think "instead of," whereas some are learning "in addition to." You can have a newsletter and have newspaper advertising if you wish to have an addition to. Or you can have usual newspaper advertising and have magazine advertising in addition to. I will try to get as many as I can close to Mililani if I have to go there personally to blog'em. The Handi Van has been super, just cost two dollars per trip. Kapolei, the Waianae Coast and the North Shore will come around I hope. It is still Oahu.

to the music, embrace the dance and the mistakes they would make."

Must Go in 2019

This blog is solidifying its position as my best blog. I am therefore planning on getting rid of it first. I need photo contributors to begin. It is the easiest contribution to the blog and very much appreciated by everyone and no commitments. The next step is a little dance information that can go with the photo. Taking of the photos - Two people is better than one - three is better than two. But the photographer makes the ultimate decision.

“Social dancers may think of the great music and dance that
spring forth from our aspiring to a life beyond death."

Then the decision by the possible Guest Blogger comes, still with no fixed commitment and they will know when they are ready. They can have their own blog within the blog. There are several reasons why dancers have turned to blogging. Blogging provides a friendly and easy way to keep your fellow dancers and even teachers up-to-date on what's going on. Spread the word about new deals, and provide tips. The more dancers come to dance blogs, the more likely they are to take classes and attend socials.

"Born in the U.S.A." by Bruce Springsteen (1984)

A blog allows you to build trust and rapport with your prospects. building your expertise and credibility. And there is feedback because people can post comments and interact with you, they can get to know you, and hopefully, will trust you enough to keep reading. Blogs are more personal, direct and more current communication, They leave an opening for comments in each blog and they are receptive to more formal answers and opinions in the blog itself. The hits can go through the ceiling. Real Social Media is much different than anything we have come across before. We have a ways to  go.

"Of the dancers, by the dancers and for the dancers" All the dancers?
Of course not, they do not all want to be involved and we must respect."

Night Club Scene, 2019

December looks like it is going howl in the Honolulu Night Clubs. Rumfire Waikiki, Suzie Wong’s Hideaway, Salsamor at District Nightclub, The District Nightclub, Ginza Night Club, Addiction Nightclub, Nextdoor, Artistry Honolulu, Hot Salsa Dance Co. to name a few, none of which I have personally visited. The action use to stop at Chinatown but now it seems to be overflowing to Kalihi. And I have always tried to kindle a little fire in the thinking of our readers with the possibilities of a new Dancing Night Club in the outskirts of Oahu.

"Social dancers know that they are not clones. They dance their own way because
there is only one of them, in all time, and their expression is unique.
If they block it, it will never exist through any other medium."

Slowly the night club entrepreneurs in Hawaii are having an understanding that these dancing people are not inclined to drink to get drunk. If they drink alcoholic beverages it is in moderation. So the cover must go up and they must sell non-alcoholic drinks. Dancers will always be thirsty. Some places on the Mainland have such fancy juice bars that they come close to liquor profits. Some have mentioned $10 cover charge. But, whatever, there will not be a need to make "Big" profits in drink and the drinks offered can be at good prices for the consumers.

Bars on Oahu are mostly about a wide collection of alcoholic blends and spirits and attract a relatively younger crowd than the lounges at the hotels. A bar characteristically plays loud music, sells drinks and serves some (finger or chopstick) food or no food at all. It becomes more upscale when a dance floor is installed to make it a night club. However a ten by ten is not a dance floor. Night Clubs on Oahu are generally larger because the dance floor is larger.

The customers dance, but dance more with DJ non-stop, up to date music and they are usually younger dancers. The intermissions in live music allow many people at the tables to socialize, talking and mingling. They will definitely have older, more experienced dancers with an appreciation of the classics. Some have acquired well-known entertainers to play the music for the night.  It is a considerable measure louder and a great deal more stunning as contrasted with a bar. There are likewise bunches of comfortable seats, lounge chairs, etc. for individuals to get a feel of venue.

Unfortunately, no one has been able to tell us what they are."
